Thrifty Treasures from Goodwill

2012-04-06_13.27.20

Remember the Goodwill where I found the Gwen Stefani jacket back in November?  I decided today would be a good day to visit it again.

Fifteen years ago, we bought our first house.  It has a formal living room, a family room, a large bonus room and a large master suite.  That means four sofa sets!  We brought with us one sofa set that we’d bought at the thrift store.  During the ensuing years, we bought two more sofa sets – inexpensive but brand new.   Then a co-worker gave me her old sofa set.

But after 15 years of two growing boys and a menagerie of animals, two of those sofa sets are long gone.  And one of the “new” sets has seen better days.

Buying brand new furniture is out of the question.  So I’ve been looking for a sofa set that would fit my teeny tiny budget for a LONG time.  I’ve seen some really nice ones at the SA but even at $200-$300 they are not in the budget for now.

This set was in really good condition and I really liked the style and colors.  I assumed they would be priced at about $200 each. Even so, I checked the price tag.  What?!  That can’t be right; it must be an error.  I doubled checked with the manager and couldn’t believe it when she told me the price was right.  Yes, THE PRICE IS RIGHT!  With my senior discount, the set was only $50!  I have no idea the brand name, but they were clean with  no stains or tears.

Turns out they had just been donated and taken out to the floor while I was shopping.  The donor was still in the store when I overheard her surprise that “her” sofas had already been bought!  I was tempted to approach her to thank her, but, no, I didn’t.

This store had some great stuff.  One of the employees told me they always have nice stuff, but had recently received some great donations.  They had an antique steamer and a few other really nice antique pieces.

Cash for Trash: Betsey Johnson Dress from Salvation Army

DSC09776

BETSEY JOHNSON Women's Beautiful Feminine Floral Print Sleeveless Long Dress LG NWT – paid $3 – sold $59.95

This Betsey Johnson dress is really beautiful (I know the picture kinda sucks).  It’s so feminine in a retro style that reminds me of the 1940s.  I was glad to get 20 times what I paid for it!

New York Designer Betsey Johnson has been “rocking” the fashion industry with her unique and original designs since the 1960's with her “frilly retro dresses and kooky-sexy separates”.

Reyn Spooner L.A. Dodgers Medium Blue Hawaiian Resort Shirt Men's Size L – paid $2 – sold $19.99

I love Hawaiian shirts.  I don’t wear them nor do any of my guys, so what’s a girl to do?  Sell them, of course!  I started selling them years ago.  I did a ton of research and gathered as much info as I could.  Then, for one reason or another, I stopped selling shirts, which were the only clothing item I sold at that time.  But after my success selling these Disney shirts, I knew it was time to revisit this niche.  Stay tuned for a post on Hawaiian shirts …

McCall's 4041 Medieval Renaissance Gown and Headpiece Costume 14-20 NEW – paid $0.75 – sold $22.95

Patterns are another great niche for reselling.  You can pick these up for under $1; and depending on the pattern, they resell for some great bucks.  Of course, not all patterns are great sellers, but Vogue and costume patterns are good ones to look for.  I prefer picking up new uncut patterns because I can be assured all the pieces are there; and they also get higher prices.  Stayed tuned for a post on sewing patterns …

I haven’t been listing much so my sales have been rather quiet.  I’ve been busy working on our taxes (boring) and haunting the thrift stores (exciting).  Will be posting about a few of the great treasures I found.

Happy thrifting and selling!
